

The challenges

KSB is a listed manufacturer of pumps and valves based in Frankenthal, Germany, and is a global company with production facilities, sales companies, and service centers in over 100 countries. As part of its strategic development, the company decided to migrate its ERP system from SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA in order to meet increasing market requirements. Following on from a preliminary study carried out in 2022, the project was initiated with significant support in the initial scoping, project management, and technical implementation with Horváth. The focus here was on the specification of target visions for KSB processes that are to be transferred to the new SAP system. Horváth supported the project with holistic end-to-end consulting.
Our approach
The project started with a clear definition of the scope and framework conditions. From this, 12 work packages were derived, which served as guidelines for the entire pre-project. These concerned the overarching management model, the specification of future business models in S/4HANA, the creation of target visions for all KSB processes to be transferred, the collection of proof of concepts for the selected software, master data management, the definition of the target IT architecture and, finally, the consideration of PMO (Project Management Office) and change aspects of the transformation, including RfPs and partner selection for the main project.
The solution
As part of the project, comprehensive technical advice was provided in most of the defined work packages, particularly in the development of the functional target visions. These target visions include a process map to support process harmonization and standardization in line with the KSB Strategy 2023+. They contain the most important SAP modules and IT systems, identified gaps, and future optimization requirements.
In total, over 200 international workshops were held with stakeholders, resulting in more than 1,400 pages of target vision documents. These documents form the basis for the successful selection of bidders and the launch of the main project.
Horváth supported us in establishing effective governance for the pre-project phase of our upcoming S/4HANA transformation. In addition, thanks to Horváth's comprehensive expertise in S/4HANA, we were able to map our key processes holistically and thus create a solid basis for the actual transformation.
