The challenges :
EnBW Trading aims to evolve into a top-performing and profitable energy trader, leveraging modern automation technologies and establishing data management as a core competency. To achieve this, the company requires a scalable, high-performance, and modern data platform that can serve as the technological foundation for data-driven processes and automated trading decisions.
However, building and operating such a data backbone is highly complex: beyond the technical implementation, clear responsibilities, operating models, and governance structures must be established to ensure long-term operations, continuous development, and data quality.
Following the EDDI principle (Event Driven Data-centric IT Landscape), the platform is intended to integrate all relevant data sources from the trading business, be highly scalable, and provide end users with real-time data via streaming functionalities. At the same time, sustainable success requires a dedicated data organization with clearly defined roles, a structured metadata architecture, and full transparency regarding available data. Only in this way can data quality, governance, and the user‑centric development and provision of data‑driven products be ensured in the long term.
Our approach :
Horváth supports EnBW Trading in realizing the target vision by designing, developing, and delivering a central cloud‑based data platform (“Data Backbone”) as well as the associated data organization. Working closely with EnBW, the target architecture was developed and the appropriate technology platform selected to create a centralized and scalable data foundation for all analytics use cases.
As part of the implementation, Horváth developed a tailored operating model for the data catalog, integrated key source systems, and defined a holistic metamodel in alignment with the business units. In addition, existing metadata was migrated, the work of data stewards was coordinated, and the steering of the external implementation partner was managed within an agile project setup.
The solution :
With the implementation of the Data Backbone and the central data catalog, data management has now been fully anchored within the line organization. End users benefit from real‑time or near‑real‑time availability of relevant data and analyses, significantly accelerating data‑driven decision-making processes.
Unified standards and clearly defined processes enable the continuous improvement of data quality and create a reliable foundation for developing new data‑driven use cases. As a result, the solution makes a key contribution to achieving the Trading Target Vision 2025 – through increased efficiency, greater transparency, and consistent data orientation across the entire trading business.
The colleagues from Horváth played a key role in defining the Data Backbone as the core of our new IT architecture. Their deep understanding of the trading business, combined with their ability to structure and lead the complex implementation, was essential for the project’s success. Built on stateoftheart technology, the developed solution forms the foundation for our future success.
