Excellence requires excellent management
Strategic management in Universities
Many universities are currently suffering from inadequate governance structures and management processes, and are therefore unable to realize their full potential, neither nationally nor internationally. The same conclusion was drawn by an international panel of experts evaluating the Excellence Initiative (Internationale Expertenkommission zur Evaluation der Exzellenzinitiative).
The phenomenon ranges from an unclear definition of an organization-wide strategy and the lack of commitment to its ambitions, to roles and responsibilities as well as insufficiently planning and controlling processes developed through history. These factors make it virtually impossible to work towards a common goal and to implement an university-wide management of all executive activities. Instead, silos have often developed within the university (e.g. individual faculties, institutes, research clusters), each of which strives individually for excellence.
