Operational Excellence in Financial Industries

- » Rainer M. Zierhofer, Head of Competence Center Financial Industries
The remit of COOs in finance is increasingly expanding from the development and provision of classical back-office services to the comprehensive management of operative processes along the lines of industrial models. We have grouped together the complex range of necessary management issues into a methodological framework which enables you to step back and see how everything interacts, to see the big picture. The goal is to achieve “Operational Excellence”, something which is increasingly becoming a decisive success factor in today’s drastic price competition.
The Operational Excellence Framework
Operational Excellence can be described as “the ability to create an efficient and effective value chain through the integrative use and shaping of process-based, organizational, technological and cultural factors.”
Our approach is based on the Operational Excellence Framework, a methodological framework developed by scientists from the private European Business School (EBS) and experts from the management consultants Horváth & Partners, and tested for validity through discussions with specialists from the world of finance.
The Operational Excellence Framework structures all relevant management topics concerned with developing and providing services, together with customer management, into four main fields of equal importance. This not only helps reduce the complexity of the individual topics, it also supports the objective of achieving operational excellence by creating a balanced, methodologically coordinated management approach.
- Strategy Alignment: Comprises the rigorous and consistent alignment of processes with corporate strategy.
- Process, Organization and IT Management: Consists of the main issues in designing the organizational structures of a company, its processes and its IT environment, and focuses in particular on the active improvement of core and support processes.
- Performance Management: Contains organizational, process-based and methodological factors of performance management. Major individual components include cost, quality and capacity management.
- Human Capital Management: Focuses on managing the “human element” of a company’s resources and comprises the manifold aspects of active and modern HR management.
